World Patient Safety Day 2025 – Focus on Paediatrics

This year’s WHO World Patient Safety Day (WPSD) shines a light on the safety of children in healthcare. At the ESAIC, we are committed to advancing knowledge and practice in paediatric anaesthesiology to ensure the safest possible care for our youngest patients.

In recognition of WPSD, we highlight key ESAIC resources on paediatric safety, from neonatal airway management guidelines to webcasts on preoperative fasting and the effects of anaesthesia on the developing brain. These resources support clinicians in delivering safe, evidence-based care to children across Europe and beyond.

SAFEST & EPIC — Advancing Patient Safety across Europe

Every World Patient Safety Day offers us the chance to reflect not only on what we have achieved but also on what we are building toward. At ESAIC, we are committed to playing a part in two major EU-funded research initiatives — SAFEST and EPIC — which aim to strengthen patient safety across Europe.

SAFEST focuses on standardising perioperative care by developing patient-centred safety standards, creating a hospital self-evaluation and benchmarking platform, and piloting implementation to reduce complications.

EPIC works to integrate palliative care into ICUs through harmonised practices, trigger tools, staff education, ethical guidelines, and telemedicine models. In both projects, ESAIC contributes clinical expertise, dissemination, and stakeholder engagement.

Together, these initiatives tackle gaps in care, promote practical implementation, and shape safer, more consistent standards that can influence hospital practices and health policy across Europe.
